Stella Lemwaka

stellascreen-capture-headerMy name is Lamwaka Stella Laura, I come from a humble family of 10 children. I lost my father when I was 10yrs old and was raised by a single mother. This is my story…

I was introduced to Forum for African Women’s Educationalists (FAWE), a girl child support organization as I was joining secondary school.  At the time, my mother was failing to make ends meet and could not afford to pay school fees for all 10 of us. FAWE-Uganda Chapter, took me on, paid for and mentored me throughout secondary school. Not only was I able to excel academically but was also guided through other socio-economic areas of my life that I otherwise would have been lost to.  For 6 grateful years, every scholastic material I needed was provided for and all I had to worry about was good grades and dreams about my bright future…

Unfortunately, my academic life came to a halt again, when the time came for post-secondary education. My mother still could not afford the high tuition fees and at the time, FAWE only had scholarship programs for secondary school going girls. It felt terrible as my former classmates happily joined the universities we had all planned to go to together, and I looked on sadly as my once bright future seemed to go down the drain. It was a slow long year at home, filled with broken dreams…

FAWE was not about to let it go though. The organization managed to get on board a new partner, The Kenny Family Foundation, that came on to the rescue of girls’ post-secondary education. I was luckily taken on as part of the pioneer lot for the scholarship program, and was able to successfully complete university with a Bachelors’ Degree in Computer Science.

I am well on my way to achieving my career dreams thanks to FAWE’s passion for the welfare of the girl child, and the kindness and generosity of the Kenny Family. I currently work with Diamond Trust Bank, one of the leading banks in Uganda, even as I still forge my way ahead to become one of the top IT consultants in my country Uganda. I am glad that now I can take care of myself, plus help to provide for my family.

fawe-logoFAWE and the Kenny Family have both taught me that dreams can actually come to pass, if only we hold each other’s hands on the way to success. I wake up each day excited to better myself, because I know that someone out there is counting on me to be able to show them the same kindness I have been shown…
